You must have seen Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji requesting people to give up LPG subsidy under GiveItUp campaign so that it could be given to poor deserving family. 8.5 million people have voluntarily given up their subsidy so far but the funny part is that most of them are middle class. According to a survey conducted on randomly selected 1 lakh Indians who gave up their subsidy it was found that only 3% had an annual income above Rs.10 lakh.
Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that “People from the middle and lower classes are more willing to give up cooking fuel subsidy than rich customers. We have a finite amount of subsidy to disburse. Who should benefit from this? Poor women have the first right over the resources of the country. There have been strict instructions that those earning more than Rs 10 lakh a year, should give up LPG subsidy. But it is more of middle and lower middle class people like retired teachers or employees who are doing so . The affluent must give up state benefits so that it reaches the intended beneficiary . The Modi administration wants to reduce women’s health problems due to smoke from traditional ways of cooking as exposure to one hour of domestic pollution is considered equal to smoking 400 cigarettes. As many as 500,000 people die every year due to domestic pollution,”.
From 1 January the households with annual income above Rs.10 lakh are not allowed to take subsidy on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders but since retailers like Indian Oil Corp. Ltd and Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd do not have income data which the tax authorities promise to keep confidential therefore they have to depend on disclosures by consumers. Under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana , 50 million poor households will be provided a free LPG connection. The government has allocated Rs.8,000 crore for the scheme .
Well when it comes to charity it doesn’t depend how much a person can give , but instead it entirely depend on how much a person wants to give . Rich people are not willing to give LPG subsidy whereas middle class are ready to give up for the betterment of poor deserving households . So rich people don’t act like a miser GiveItUp fell the joy of giving .
