The world is changing very quickly with the new technological changes taking place every day. The new products which emerge are basically the advanced versions of that those that already exist with more efficient functionality and upgraded features. ‘Portable laser pens that can seal wounds’ are an example of one such unbelievable technological change that has taken everyone by surprise.
These specially designed laser pens aim to replace the traditional needle and thread surgical methods that are used for healing wounds. Conceptually this method is like a welding process which will be used to join two ends of flash of tissues using laser. Scientists have been working on this technique and the very first attempt was made using carbon-dioxide. However the temperature cannot be precisely controlled using this technique and there is risk of skin damage.
Abraham Katzir with his team at Tel Aviv University has now come up with an improved laser welding device that is capable of sealing the wounds both internal and external with a precise control of temperature ensuring complete safety. The temperature of the device can be set as per the requirement. The group of Abraham Katzir has created this pen like tool which consists of two optical fibers. The first optical fiber helps in directing carbon-dioxide infrared laser precisely to the location of the wound and the second optical fiber connects the pen to the infrared sensor that continuously monitors the temperature and keeps it in the perfect range of 60 to 70 degree Celsius. The major improvement with this laser pen is that the temperature can now be controlled accurately which reduces the risk of burning tissue.
The laser pen like device can be easily used for sealing the wounds. One has to just move the tip of the laser pen over the cut using water soluble protein as the soldering material. The laser pen is special as it is amongst the very few lasers developed that can transmit IR radiation. Also it can ensure that the temperature stays within the ideal range required for the sealing of wound. The laser pen is popularly known as the Katzir’s laser technique. It has been successfully used for surgical removal of gall bladder. There are many more applications of this device like curing pressure sores, migraine headaches, arthritis, burns, lower back pain, swelling etc. Laser techniques have already been used in various fields of medical science like cataract surgery
